Celebrate Earth Day With E-Waste Recycling
Saturday, April 22, marked the 47th Earth Day celebration. Earth Day started as a day to remember to reduce e-waste, recycle, conserve, and take care of Mother Earth. As the products people consume most have changed, though, the type of recycling required has changed as well. With tons of personal devices, computers, and other e-waste being thrown out on a daily basis, Earth Day is the perfect day to bring e-waste recycling into the spotlight. If you didn’t notice anything promoted in your area for electronic recycling, look into programs and recycling fundraisers you can promote or organize to encourage e-waste recycling where you live.
Observe Earth Day the Entire Month of April With Electronic Waste Recycling
A variety of Earth-conscious organizations were happy to observe the whole month of April as Earth month by encouraging recycling and promoting their e-waste recycling efforts. Besides encouraging the recycling of e-waste these companies are also offering incentives such as small cash back amounts for bringing in old electronics on Earth Day or encouraging individuals to contribute their old technology to meet a world record status for collecting the most in one day. These initiatives are bringing the challenge of recycling devices and computers to the forefront and teaching the public how to properly dispose of their devices.
Why Should E-Waste Recycling be Promoted on Earth Day?
Electronics like phones, computers, and televisions contain hazardous materials like mercury and lead. Once these toxins are added to a landfill, the potential for them to contaminate the soil and water increases greatly. The Earth Day Network reports that about 75% of e-waste is discarded every year. The more e-waste is improperly discarded the greater the risk to our environment and health. Encouraging the recycling of these products fits the need to protect Mother Earth during this year’s Earth Day celebrations. Look for e-waste recyclers to lessen the damage caused by old technology.
